Samsung launches PM-A740, RL-A760By Larry Garfield, Friday 10 December 2004
Samsung's latest two phones for Sprint target different users. One is a camera phone, the other comes with Sprint's Ready Link Push To Talk functionality.

Sprint's latest two phones from Samsung include another camera phone and a phone for the always-in-touch, supporting Sprint's own Ready Link network.

The PM-A740 is a low-cost camera phone
The Samsung RL-A760 clamshell phone measures 89 x 45.7 x 25 mm and weighs in at hefty 107 grams. When closed its front is dominated by a 96 x 96 pixel grayscale LCD display and a large speaker grill. The internal screen is a 128 x 160 pixel 16-bit color TFT. The speaker grill serves two functions, both for the speakerphone and for the phone's Ready Link capability.

Ready Link is the name of Sprint's Push-To-Talk (PTT) "walkie-talkie" service. The RL-A760 supports a separate 400-entry Ready Link address book, allowing the user to send instant half-duplex voice messages to other Ready Link users on Sprint's network, either a single person or up to 10 other people. Such capabilities are popular with many companies who need their employees to be able to page each other quickly but don't want to spend the extra money on dedicated pagers.

The RL-A760 doubles as a walkie-talkie
For more traditional users, Samsung has also launched the PM-A740, a clamshell camera phone. Weighing 99 grams and measuring 84 x 48 x 24 mm, the PM-A740 sports a 16-bit color 96 x 96 pixel STN display and camera lens on a blue cover in front and a 16-bit 128 x 160 pixel STN main display. The camera is VGA quality with built-in flash and up to 4x digital zoom. The camera can be used for photo caller ID, although the memory footprint is small with only 4 MB of RAM with just 1.5 MB download capacity.

Both phones run on dual-band 800 / 1900 MHz CDMA 1xRTT with support for 800 MHz AMPS analog fallback. Both support SMS messages and polyphonic ringtones and come with a small PIM suite with 300 address book entries.

The Samsung PM-A740 will be available through Sprint in December for $229.99 USD or $79.99 USD after rebate with service agreement. The RL-A760 is slated to be available by the end of the year, but no price has been announced.
