mmO2 subsidiary Manx Telecom has announced that they will be rolling out high-speed hybrid wireless service throughout their network covering the Isle of Man. The service will include a mixture of UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) and HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) wireless technologies, both of which are based on WCDMA (Wideband-CDMA) technology. In addition to offering high-speed access to Isle of Man users, it is hoped that as Europe's first major HSDPA rollout it can serve as a testbed for future rollouts of high-speed access and content services.
The HSDPA-enabled network will for now be limited to "only" 3.6 Mbps, which Manx Telecom says is due to limitations of the mobile device terminals on the network. As those improve, speeds will scale up to 14.4 Mbps. No pricing information for the service was available.
