Portable video with the Goodmans GPDR40By Jørgen Sundgot, Tuesday 30 November 2004
Following up from its previous low-budget offering, UK manufacturer Goodmans is at it again with the introduction of the video-playing, music-toting, picture-viewing GPDR40.

Having already brought one low-budget portable media viewer to market, Goodmans has just introduced its second attempt - the GPDR40. Measuring a petite 110 x 80 x 30 mm, the relatively small unit comes with a 40 GB hard drive which according to Goodmans should hold up to 200 hours of direct recording from TV, or for instance 10,000 MP3 tunes.

Billed as a personal entertainment system, the GPDR40 offers up a 3.6" TFT display with 16-bit colour depth, a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and adjustable brightness. Supporting both on-screen and TV playback as well as recording, the the GPDR40 offers three different quality settings: QVGA at 15 FPS, QVGA at 30 FPS and VGA at 30 FPS.

Unlike competing offerings, the GPDR40 does not rely on a cradle to enable recording, but accepts a direct composite video connection. For video out, the unit relies on SCART, and the GPDR40 also doubles as a USB mass storage device courtesy of its USB 2.0 port to enable users to transfer content to and from the unit. Supported video playback formats include ASF, MPEG and AVI.

In the audio department, the GPDR40 offers playback of MP3, WMA and WAV files, and is also capable of recording audio through its built-in microphone. Output is provided by a 3.5 mm earphone jack, as well as a built-in speaker.

Other features include the ability to synchronize Calendar information with Microsoft Outlook, as well as an SD/MMC Card expansion slot which provides yet one more means of connectivity.

Scheduled for availability in January 2005, no further information was available at the time of writing concerning the pricing of the GPDR40.
