The Xplore M28 is a slider-phone design measuring 106 x 51 x 23 mm and weighing in at 130 grams, on the lighter end of communicators. It runs Palm OS 5.4 "Garnet", as do most recent Palm OS handhelds and communicators, but uses a virtual handwriting area for handheld input rather than a QWERTY keyboard. The number pad for phone dialing sits behind a the sliding front half of the device.
The M28 is a tri-band 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz GSM/GPRS device targeted for the Asian market. It lacks Bluetooth but does include the Palm OS-standard Secure Digital card slot and Infrared port. The 1050 mAh Lithium Ion battery is rated for 3.5 hours talk time or 150 hours standby.
On the handheld side, the M28 sports a 2.2 inch 220 x 160 pixel 18-bit TFT display as well as a 1.3 megapixel digital camera capable of both still images and recording video clips. The 168 MHz TI OMAP 310 processor is slower than most new communicators, but on par with many smartphones and sufficient for MP3 playback (also included). The sound system offers both Midi and MP3-based polyphonic ringtones, which can be stored in the 64 MB of RAM or 32 MB internal flash drive, similar to the flash memory store on the palmOne Tungsten T5. Software support, beyond the standard Palm OS features, includes SMS, MMS, WAP, e-mail, and support for Java-based games and applications.
The Xplore M28 is available now in Malaysia, China, Hong Kong and Macau, and Thailand for a price of 2288 Malaysian Ringgits (about $600 USD).
