A new European survey shows that the number of wireless Internet Wi-Fi hotspots in Europe has grown to 27,000, a marked increase. Over 68% of those hotspots, however, are located in just France, Germany, and the UK.
Prices for Wi-Fi hotspots remain higher in Europe than in the US or Asian markets, but are showing signs of decline. The average price for one hour of service is now 5.74 EUR, down 11% from the start of the year. 24 hour and 1 month service plans have not changed, however, as providers focus more on short-term 2 and 3 hour billing slices. In addition, Europeans tend to rely on prepaid cards, vouchers, and credit cards for one-off or pay-as-you-go service, which together amount to 77% of all prices. That differs from the US, where most companies try to get customers to sign on to 3, 6, or 12 month contracts.
