It's a blast from the future as Nokia resurrects its Series 90 platform with the widescreen 7710, featuring a Megapixel camera, touch-screen interface and features galore.
At the annual Nokia Mobility Conference in Monaco and the Destination Nokia event held in Bangkok, Thailand, Nokia today announced the widescreen Nokia 7710 communicator, resurrecting the company's Series 90 platform. Originally slated for the now-cancelled Nokia 7700, the platform offers touch screen input and a broad range of applications equal to that which is present in Series 80, the platform powering Nokia's upcoming 9300 and 9500 communicator products.
Compatible with GSM/HSCSD/GPRS/EDGE 900/1800/1900 MHz networks, the 7710 features a wide, touch-sensitive colour screen with a resolution of 640 x 320 pixels and 16-bit colour depth, which also boasts a special power save mode activating only 640 x 64 pixels of the display. Up to 90 MB of internal memory is available to users, with a 128 MB MultiMedia Card (MMC) to be bundled in its sales package.
Featuring an integrated Megapixel camera with a maximum resolution of 1152 x 864 pixels and 2x digital zoom, the 7710 also harbours an integrated FM radio, well as Bluetooth, USB and Nokia's proprietary Pop-Port interface for connectivity purposes.
Offering a broad range of software, the 7710 includes much of the application suite to be found in the upcoming Series 80-based Nokia 9300 and 9500 communicators, such as a complete PIM suite; an XHTML compatible Internet browser; e-mail client supporting SMTP, POP3 and IMAP4; an office suite comprising Word Processor, Sheet and a PowerPoint viewer; timed profiles; and more. In addition, the 7710 also supports Java MIDP 2.0 applications.

Other supported technologies include SMS and MMS for messaging, as well as SyncML for Over-The-Air (OTA) synchronization, with text input primarily taken care of by means of handwriting recognition.
That's not all, however, as the Nokia 7710 also offers multiple-format video recording courtesy of its integrated digital camera, supporting QCIF resolution at 17 FPS in MPEG4, H.263 and Real Video 8 formats - for which the device also supports full-screen playback at 15 FPS. Additionally, a music player supports MP3, AAC, RealAudio 7 and 8, WAV, MIDI and AMR formats, whilst picture viewing is also in place with support for JPEG, GIF, WBMP, BMP, MBM and PNG formats.
More specialized applications will also be shipping with the 7710, including a moblog client which will let users upload images and text to their personal blog. PhotoBase and drawing board applications offer image editing functionalities such as crop, zoom, rotate and flip, and users will also be able to annotate images taken with the device. Visual Radio, a which was originally to be introduced with the 7710's cancelled predecessor, the 7700, will also be present in the 7710.
Visual Radio provides an interactive information channel to be combined with FM broadcasts, allowing listeners to see information on the song and artist currently playing on the radio or participate in competitions. Lastly, the 7710 will also come with a pre-installed eBook reader compatible with titles from retail site eBooks.com.
The Nokia 7710 will also support the Nokia Streamer SU-22 accessory, which will be used in DVB-H mobile TV pilots in a variety of countries around the world, enabling the device to receive digital TV broadcasts over the air.
Shipments of the 7710 are slated to begin in Asia and China in the fourth quarter of 2004, with Europe and Africa trailing behind in the first quarter of 2005. Nokia did not comment on the expected retail price of the unit.
