Motorola offers Bluetooth headset quartetBy Larry Garfield, Thursday 28 October 2004
Motorola is continuing to beef up its Bluetooth portfolio with four new Bluetooth devices; two headsets, one necklace-"headset", and a speakerphone.

Motorola has added four new products to its Bluetooth accessory line up, including the HS850 and HS805 headsets, the HS830 necklace hanging headset, and the HF800 Bluetooth speakerphone.

The HS850 adds Bluetooth 1.2 to the HS810 design
The HS850 is essentially the same as the company's previously announced HS810, but updated to include Bluetooth 1.2 support. That allows for lower power consumption and improved clarity through reduced interference, as Bluetooth 1.2 is designed to be more interference-resistant. It is physically nearly identical save for a new all-black casing, and uses the same power charger as most Motorola handsets. It is rated for 8 hours talk time and 200 hours standby, and will cost $99.99 USD.

The HS805 uses a "surfboard" style design, consisting of an earloop and elongated body. The HS805 includes the same noise cancellation technology as the Motorola product line, but rather than using a power charger it runs on a replaceable AAA battery. While that does affect the size and weight Motorola claims 22 hours of talk time from a single battery, making it ideal for travelers who are away from power outlets for extended periods. It also uses Bluetooth 1.2 and can be worn on either ear. It will cost $59.99 USD.

The company is also making available the HS830, the headset used by Motorola's Momo Bluetooth motorcycle helmet, as a necklace-headset. Talk time is rated at five hours. The HS830 will be available worldwide, like the other headsets, but the helmet version will not. Like the others it uses Bluetooth 1.2 for reduced power consumption and has a rated life of 5 hours talk time or 100 hours standby. Pricing information was not available.

Finally, for chatty groups of people Motorola is updating their speakerphone line with the HF800 Bluetooth speakerphone. Essentially the same as the company's previous Bluetooth speakerphone accessories, the HF800 offers incremental upgrades in power consumption and audio clarity. Unlike the headsets, the HF800 uses Bluetooth 1.1 and is rated for 3 hours of talk time. It also uses the same charger as most other Motorola products.

The HS830 will be available in the first quarter of 2005, while the other models will be available by the end of 2004.
