Samsung slides out SGH-D500By Jørgen Sundgot, Monday 25 October 2004
Yet another slider handset finds its way to Samsung's portfolio: the SGH-D500 offers a whopping 80 MB of memory, 1.3 MP camera, 18-bit colour screen and MP3 player.

Upping the ante for slider handset manufacturers everywhere, Samsung recently unveiled the latest addition to its steadily growing portfolio of increasingly popular non-candybar, non-clamshell handsets. Slated towards the business market, the high-end slider contains an array of advanced features, including the very first Megapixel camera to grace a GSM model from the Korean manufacturer.

The SGH-D500 brings Samsung's first Megapixel camera to GSM handsets
The SGH-D500 combines a slide-up design with an integrated antenna; 80 MB of storage capacity; a 1.3 Megapixel camera with flash; video recording and messaging; Bluetooth, an e-mail client: SyncML connectivity; 64-note polyphonic ring tones; speakerphone capabilities; a 1.9", 18-bit colour display capable of displaying up to 262,144 colours - and an MP3 music player.

An 1.3 Megapixel camera allows users to take pictures and video, as well as apply any of 10 embedded special effects and emoticons. For video recording, the SGH-D500 offers 4x digital zoom, whilst for pictures, 7x digital zoom represents the upper limit.

According to Samsung, the 80 MB of dynamically allocated storage will allow users to store over 1,000 Megapixel images, capture 60 minutes of video, save 15 to 20 MP3 or AAC songs, enter up to 60 minutes of voice recording or alternatively use the space for receiving and sending attached files.

In addition to a variety of synchronisation options such as USB and SyncML DS, the SGH-D500 also offers an e-mail client which supports vCard and vCalendar formats. Other features include MMS, Java and WAP 2.0 capabilities, as well as integrated Bluetooth for PAN purposes of various kinds such as Dial-Up Networking and Headset/Handsfree use.

Measuring 94 x 46 x 24 mm and weighing in at 99 g, the tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz Samsung SGH-D500 will launch some time in the fourth quarter of 2004, although pricing has yet to be specified.

An additional hi-res picture of the Samsung SGH-D500 is available on the following page.
