The SMT5600 runs Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for Smartphones with the addition of Windows Media Player 10 Mobile. The latter ties into Microsoft's online music store, allowing users to browse an online archive of songs, listen to samples, and license copies for download to their home PCs. The files will, of course, be restricted by Microsoft's "Janus" so-called "Digital Rights Management" system, which limits what a user can do with the files once they've been downloaded. Each purchase will be billed to the user's monthly phone bill.
A standard candybar phone design, the SMT5600 also sports a VGA camera. The camera includes 4x digital zoom and video clip recording capability, both of which are becoming more and more common on high-end phones. It also includes a speakerphone function. Naturally it also includes all the usual Windows Mobile for Smartphone software. The radio is a tri-band 850/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS antenna.
The SMT5600 also makes use of Intellisync's new carrier-based service to allow for push-based e-mail from Microsoft Exchange 2003 servers or Lotus Dominow servers. Intellisync Mobile Suite offers push-based email, wireless synchronization, and the ability of company IT departments to centrally manage devices over-the-air.
The Audiovox SMT5600 is available through AT&T Wireless for $199.99 USD with two year service contract, after rebates.
