Dell has officially launched their new X50 line, consisting of the X50 Standard, X50 Advanced, and X50v with VGA screen and graphics processor.
Dell today has announced three new handhelds comprising the Axim X50 line, including Windows Media Player 10 Mobile. In typical Dell style two of them have the same name, while the third offers a VGA screen and dedicated 3D graphics processor.
The Axim X50 (all models) measures 119 x 73 x 16 mm. The device is wrapped in black and silver plastic casing with all of the usual buttons one expects from a Windows Mobile handheld. However, unlike the X30 line the X50 includes both Secure Digital and Compact Flash card slots on top. The battery is a 1100 mAh removable Lithium Ion, with a 2200 mAh battery available separately.
The top model, the Axim X50v, sports the same Intel PXA270 624 MHz processor with auto-throttling as the X30 Advanced 624 MHz. Its main feature, however, is a 3.7" VGA 640 x 480 TFT display, supporting 16-bit color. The first VGA display from Dell, it is backed by a dedicated Intel 2700G graphics processor for real-time 3D graphics and what Dell claims is DVD-quality video support. That is backed by 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of ROM, 90 MB of which is user-accessible. The X50v also offers both Bluetooth 1.2 and 802.11b Wi-Fi support via an internal antenna. The device also comes with two 3D games to show off the graphics capabilities. It will sell for $499 USD.
The higer-end of the two identically named X50 models, which we will refer to as the X50 Advanced, carries the more usual 3.5" 240 x 320 QVGA 16-bit color TFT display common to most Windows Mobile handhelds. It also offers both Bluetooth 1.2 and Wi-Fi support, and also includes 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB ROM (90 MB user-accessible). The processor is an Intel PXA270 rated at 520 MHz with throttling, with no extra graphics accelerator. It will sell for $399 USD.
The other X50, the X50 Standard, also uses the standard QVGA display and offers only Bluetooth 1.2, no W-Fi. Its processor is also an Intel PXA270, rated at 416 MHz with throttling, and it offers 64 MB of RAM and 64 MB of ROM, although the ROM is not user-accessible but reserved for the OS. It will cost for $299 USD.
All three models run Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for Pocket PC, and all include the just-released Windows Media Player 10 Mobile multimedia viewer from Microsoft. WMP 10 Mobile is part of Microsoft's new push to bring their proprietary formats to mobile devices, and as such includes the company's "Janus" system for restricting and limiting the user's ability to copy or playback files using so-called Digital Rights Management systems. Dell also announced that an upgrade to the new Media Player will be available for Axim X30 users within the next 60 days.
The Dell Axim X50 line will be available in early November.
