The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has announced that it is beginning work on a new standard for batteries used in mobile phones. Dubbed IEEE P1725 and entitled "Standard for Rechargeable Batteries for Cellular Telephones", the standard is aimed at setting uniform criteria for the design, production, and evaluation of mobile batteries. That covers battery and battery pack electrical and mechanical construction, chemistries, process control, qualification and packaging technologies, among other areas. The standard seeks to make phone batteries more robust and reliable, which in turn should improve capacity over time. It is unclear if the standard will also address form factor to allow for batteries that are not proprietary to a specific company or model.
