A new study by Research and Markets expects the market for mobile data to grow dramatically from $16.7 billion USD in 2003 to nearly $78 billion USD in 2007.
The majority of that revenue will go not to the content creators, however, but to mobile operators and carriers. Third party content providers will account for about 40% of the total, according to Research and Markets' predictions.
Also claimed by the report is that the United States is catching up with Europe and Asia in mobile devices, with 168 million wireless subscribers in 2004, 30% of whom use wireless data services and applications. That's about the same percentage as in Europe, however, European and Asian carriers are making more of their money from mobile data, nearly 20% of revenues compared to a mere 2% for US carriers.
