OQO handtop just around the bendBy Jørgen Sundgot, Wednesday 29 September 2004
OQO confirms its Windows XP-powered handtop, the OQO 01, is slated to go on sale on October 14th, featuring a WVGA touch screen, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 20 GB of storage - and more.

Now two years in the making, handtop maker OQO has confirmed that the company will make its first handtop - the OQO 01 - commercially available on October 14. Just in time for wealthy Christmas shoppers, the handtop will offer a smorgasboard of features in a form factor more reminiscent of PDAs of yore, running a fullworthy version of Microsoft's Windows XP operating system.

Powered by a 1 GHz Transmeta processor, the OQO 01 will come with an integrated 20 GB HDD, 256 MB of DDR RAM and an 5" touch-sensitive display - all in a package measuring a petite 124 x 86 x 23 mm and weighing in at a not-so-petite 397 g. Still, OQO has managed to include an impressive array of features within its unit, which slides open to reveal an integrated thumbboard.

In closed mode, the thumbboard is concealed by the 16-bit transflective TFT display, which boasts WVGA resolution at 800 x 480 pixels and is powered by a graphics card with 8 MB of memory and 3D capabilities. To navigate, users must either utilize the touch screen in combination with a 'digital pen', or a combination of the QWERTY thumbboard, joystick-like TrackStik and mouse buttons.

For connectivity purposes, the OQO 01 boasts not only USB 1.1 and 4-pin FireWire, but also integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 802.11b, placing it among the most versatile mobile devices currently available. The device is also equipped with a 3.5 mm earphone jack and a microphone for audio purposes, and comes with a docking cable which expands the unit's I/O capabilities to include additional USB and FireWire ports, Ethernet, Audio out and a SXGA (1,280 x 1,024 pixels) video output. Additionally, the 01 also offers dual display support.

To be powered by a exchangeable Lithium Polymer battery, OQO claims a battery life of up to three hours for the 01, depending on usage. To run either Windows XP Home or Professional installed, and sell for $1,899 USD or $1,999, respectively, the OQO 01 is slated for commercial availability on October 14 in the U.S.

An additional hi-res image of the OQO 01 is available on the following page.
