PalmSource has signed three new Original Device Manufacturers (ODMs), including GSPDA, Inventec Appliances, and Portable Innovation Technology (PiTech). The three new partners will not sell devices themselves but make device components for handhelds and smartphones that they can then sell to Palm OS licensees such as palmOne, Sony, Samsung, and others. The intent is to increase competition for parts, thus lowering prices for licensees and bringing down the cost of new devices. It also helps spread out the research and development costs of new hardware while also making turnaround time faster.
