The 6670, Nokia's new smartphoneBy Jørgen Sundgot, Thursday 23 September 2004
Launching the latest addition to a now-extensive line of smartphones, Nokia has unveiled the megapixel-enabled 6670 - better described as the serious cousin of the 7610.

Nokia today introduced its latest addition to the company's broadening range of megapixel imaging smartphones, currently comprising the 7610 and upcoming 6630 models. Slightly less experimental in its design than the 7610, Nokia aims the 6670 at mobile professionals and as such has bundled document viewers, a PDF-capable microbrowser and support for printing e-mails and images by means of Bluetooth.

Nokia's new 6670 comes across as the 7610's serious cousin
To be available in two tri-band versions, one GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz for Europe and 850/1800/1900 MHz for the Americas, the 6670 is as with other Nokia smartphones based on the company's own Series 60 platform. Weighing 118 grams and measuring 109 x 53 x 21 mm, the handset is roughly identical to the 7610 in shape and size, except for a more traditional keypad design.

A 16-bit colour display with a resolution of 176 x 208 pixels graces the front of the handset, doubling as a viewfinder for the integrated Megapixel camera which offers a resolution of 1152 x 864 pixels. The camera shoots both stills and video, the latter in a maximum resolution of 174 x 144 pixels - also known as QCIF. Additionally, a new photo editor application enables on-the-fly image enhancing with crop, frame, autofix, and text-adding functionalities.

Containing 8 MB of internal memory, the Nokia 6670 will come bundled with a 64 MB MMC card in the sales package, and boasts Nokia's proprietary Pop-Port interface for accessory expansion. Also in the connectivity department, the 6670 supports GPRS Class B Multislot Class 7, as well as Bluetooth and USB.

The 6670 is the first Series 60 product to support mobile antivirus software developed by F-Secure, with additional security available by means of Nokia's Mobile VPN (Virtual Private Network) Client. Furthermore, the smartphone comes with a copy of Access' NetFront browser, which supports PDF files. Other software features include support for Wireless Village based instant messaging and presence-enabled contacts, as well as the now-common audio and video playback support courtesy of the pre-installed RealOne player.

In related news, Nokia also introduced several accessories today which are supported by the 6670, including the Nokia Wireless Headset HS-11W and Nokia Wireless GPS Module, as well as the Nokia Remote Camera, a wireless home monitoring solution which utilizes SMS and MMS to communicate with mobile phones.

Expected to be available in early October 2004, the Nokia 6670 will according to Nokia retail for approximately 500 EUR.
