Opera Software has announced that over 1 million copies of its Opera Mobile web browser for Symbian OS have been downloaded from the company's direct download site to date, making it far and away the most popular 3rd party application for Symbian OS devices. That is in addition to pre-installed copies of Opera on the smartphone platform and downloads through other archives and partner sites.
Opera may be the most widely-used mobile browser, but it is far from the only. Microsoft's Pocket IE, palmOne's Web Pro, and various browsers based on Access Systems NetFront also compete in the same space, plus various others, keeping the mobile web browser market very heterogeneous and competitive compared to the desktop market where Microsoft's Internet Explorer still controls over 85% of the market, although that number has been dropping. Mobile browsers also vary in feature set and performance much more widely than desktop web browsers, although Opera is the only company that offers a unified rendering engine across both desktop and mobile systems.
