Siemens SF65 to turn headsBy Jørgen Sundgot, Wednesday 15 September 2004
The German handset maker joins the ranks of swivel-inducing manufacturers with its new SF65, a megapixel-toting mobile phone with a clamshell design.

At an event in Copenhagen, Siemens today unveiled its second-ever megapixel handset, the SF65. Rather than opt for the candybar style form factor of the S65, its first megapixel handset, Siemens chose to make the SF65 a clamshell handset - complete with a swiveling screen, digital zoom and integrated LED flash.

Siemens chalks up its first swivel-screen handset with the introduction of the SF65
The swivel action screen of the SF65 harbours a 16-bit internal colour display with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. The centerpiece of the handset, its integrated 1.3 Megapixel digital camera with SXGA resolution, is located on the back of the lower half of the handset. This solution enables a full 180 degree rotation of the upper half of the handset, which can then be folded back on top of the lower half, creating a digital camera style usage mode.

Other features of the camera include 4x digital zoom and a self timer, as well as an integrated LED flash and software for picture editing and adding effects. A whopping 18 MB of memory should, according to Siemens, provide enough storage space for up to 55 pictures in maximum (SXGA) resolution, 300 pictures in VGA resolution or a substantial 900 pictures in low resolution.

Connectivity-wise, the SF65 supports dual-band GSM 900/1800 MHz, in addition to GPRS Class 10 and Infrared for PAN connectivity. Messaging support is comprehensive with SMS, EMS, MMS and a POP3 capable e-mail client, whilst other features include a WAP 1.2.1 browser, J2ME MIDP 2.0 and 64-chord polyphonic ringtones.

Measuring in at 91 x 44 x 23 mm, Siemens claims a battery life of up to 400 hours of standby time and 4 days of talk time from the 97g SF65, which will be available in a 'Polar White' finish.

The SF65 will be available from December 2004 across Europe and Asia, with pricing to be announced locally; initial announcements suggest the handset will sell for approximately $550 USD.

An additional hi-res picture of the Siemens SF65 is available on the following page.
