Slimmed-down BlackBerry 7100t from RIMBy Jørgen Sundgot, Wednesday 8 September 2004
Designers with Research In Motion have placed the BlackBerry on a diet, resulting in a device that's not only far slimmer than previous models, but also more capable.

Continuing to improve on its offerings, Research In Motion (RIM) today unveiled the BlackBerry 7100t, featuring radical changes in the design department and added features. Narrower than previous models, the candybar 7100t still offers the signature BlackBerry thumbboard - but with a twist, as each key now plays host to two letters of the alphabet, leaving a predictive text solution to deduce what the user is typing.

RIM's new BlackBerry 7100t boasts an updated design and brand new text input interface
To be available exclusively from T-Mobile USA, the 7100t boasts quad-band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 Mhz and GPRS, as well as Bluetooth for PAN connectivity purposes. As with prevous models, the application set offers push-based e-mail in addition to telephony, instant messaging, HTML web browsing and a full suite of Personal Information Management (PIM) applications

Users will navigate the device by means of its 16-bit colour screen and integrated thumbboard, as well as its five-way navigational pad and dedicated 'send' and 'end' keys. Entering text is accomplished through a new and proprietary keyboard technology from RIM called SureType, which through an integrated keyboard and software system lets users alternate between dialing numbers and entering text.

Unmodestly, RIM claims its SureType technology "dramatically outshines the traditional multi-tap phone approach", and will "fundamentally change the way people think about typing on mobile phones." Also according to RIM, additional features include a 'typical talk time' of over 4 hours, as well as integrated speakerphone capabilities and polyphonic ring tones.

Starting in October, customers who activate the BlackBerry 7100t with a qualifying rate plan, can purchase the device for a net $199.99 USD after mail-in rebates. Additionally, T-Mobile plans to offer customers bundled (voice and data) rate plans for the BlackBerry 7100t, starting at $59.99 USD.
