Nokia unveils 9300 CommunicatorBy Jørgen Sundgot, Wednesday 8 September 2004

Nokia today announced the Nokia 9300, a new high-end communicator which the company itself pegged has having 'both beauty and brains'. Offering a feature set similar to that of the soon-to-be-available Nokia 9500 Communicator, the 9300 is considerably lighter and also somewhat smaller due to its shedding of an integrated digital camera and support for Wi-Fi 802.11b.

The 9300 is a slimmer and slightly less-capable version of the 9500
Like the 9500, the 9300 boasts a 16-bit colour screen with a resolution of 640 x 200 pixels inside its clamshell design, whilst when closed, an external 128 x 128 pixel display functions as the main interface. As the fourth device in Nokia's line of Communicators, the 9300 also sports the now-familiar QWERTY thumbboard with its array of navigational keys for navigating the interface, complete with a nine-way navigational pad.

Again, as with the 9500, the 9300 offers support for tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz networks, as well as Fax, HSCSD, GPRS and EDGE Class 10. PAN connectivity is not as fully featured is the case with the 9500, however the 9300 still offers Bluetooth, Infrared, USB 2.0 and Nokia's proprietary Pop-Port connector. Other features relating to connectivity include five-way conference calling and integrated speakerphone capabilities.

Based on Symbian OS 7.OS and Nokia's Series 80 Communicator platform, the 9300 includes the vast majority of applications found on the 9500, such as full PIM suite; a word processor, spreadsheet editor and presentation editor - all compatible with Microsoft Office 97 and onwards. Additionally, the 9300 also boasts broad support for audio and video formats, as well as J2ME MIDP 2.0 and Personal Java 1.0.

The 9300 also comes with an e-mail client - in fact a Java application - which supports a broad range of protocols including IMAP4, POP3, APOP, SMTP, MIME, IMAP4-SSL/TLS, POP3-SSL/TLS, SMTP-SSL/TLS and SyncML 1.1.2. Similarly acronym-laden is the web browser, which supports XHTML, HTML 4.01 and WML 1.3 content, whilst carrier-based messaging is ensured through support for SMS and MMS.

80 MB of integrated memory offer storage space for e-mails, documents and whatnot, whilst a MMC Card expansion slot also offers memory expansion up to 2 GB. In total, the features of the 9300 add up to a slimmer and lighter version of the 9500 at 167 g and 13.2 x 5.1 x 2.1 cm. This package also houses the exchangeable, rechargeable battery of the 9300, which according to Nokia will offer up to 4 hours of talk time and up to 200 hours of standby time.

Planned availability for the Nokia 9300 is in the 1st quarter of 2005. Nokia will offer two tri-band versions of the Nokia 9300 - one optimized for mobile networks in Europe and Asia (GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz) and one optimized for mobile networks in the Americas (GSM 850/1800/1900 MHz). Information concerning the pricing of the Nokia 9300 was not disclosed.
