Philips and Samsung have announced that Samsung will begin to build Philips' Near Field Communication (NFC) chips in some of its mobile phones. Near Field Communication is a close-range wireless data system for information exchange, even closer range than Bluetooth. Similar to RFID tags but more powerful, NFC transmitters have a range of only a few centimeters and allow for peer-to-peer exchange of identification information. Philips sees their NFC chips as enabling more personalized devices that support secure payments, identification for public transit and other debit card style transactions, keyless building access, use as a point of sale terminal, and other similar uses.
