NEC's new 3G handset sports not one but two digital cameras. The second, of course, is intended for video conferencing.

The candybar-design NEC e228 appears as a typical phone at first glance, but quick investigation reveals a camera lens on the front, pointed at the user, and one on the back, facing away. The back-mounted camera is designed for picture taking, while the front-mounted camera is intended for video conferencing, made possible by the 3G-capable radio. The display is a large 16-bit color display, intended to be video-friendly.
Measuring 129 x 53 x 21.5 mm and weighing 125 grams, the e228 also supports video playback and MP3 playback. Downloadable Java games are supported as well, as of course are SMS and MMS. To hold all of that multimedia content, the e228 comes with 18 MB of memory available to the user. Expansion is available through a Sony Memory Stick Duo slot, which can take up a 128 MB card at a time. The battery is rated for 2.5 hours talk time, 132 hours standby, or 106 minutes of video.
The NEC e228 will be available in Europe through Hutchison's 3 network. Pricing and more detailed availability were not available.
