Philips 650 claims 5 week standbyBy Larry Garfield, Wednesday 21 July 2004
Philips' new 650 mobile phone claims over a month of standby time, fit for travelers who can never remember where they put their charger.

Philips has launched the new Philips 650 tri-band phone, with a claimed battery life of over a month of standby time.

A typical phone with a-typical battery life
The Philips 650 is a clamshell phone, measuring 88 x 46 x 24.5 mm and weighing 93 grams. Not uncommon for a modern mobile phone, it sports both an internal 16-bit color display based on TFT technology measuring 128 x 160 pixels and an external OLED display for caller ID. It is backed by a tri-band GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 MHz radio, and supports SMS, EMS, and MMS messaging.

Java applications (MIDP 2.0) and polyphonic ring tones are available for download. The phone includes a WAP 2.0 browser and the usual PIM suite of organizers and clocks, and text input is via T9. In all, fairly standard for a modern phone save for the lack of a camera.

The 650's main claim to fame, however, is its battery life. Philips rates the 650's battery life at 8.5 hours of talk time or a whopping 5 weeks of standby time. Meanwhile, it also offers 6 MB of user-accessible RAM, enough for approximately 1000 phone book entries.

Although the 650 does not include a camera, Philips will also offer an optional camera accessory that not only takes pictures but can plug into a TV set to show stored images as a slideshow.

The Philips 650 will be available this fall, although price and which carriers will offer it have not yet been announced.

High-resolution images of the Philips 650 are available on the following pages.
