Danger Hiptop goes worldwide with new softwareBy Larry Garfield, Wednesday 21 July 2004
A new tri-band version of the Danger Hiptop allows users to roam free, while a new software upgrade is available for all Hiptop users.

Danger has released a new version of its unique Hiptop smartphone, now supporting a tri-band GSM/GPRS radio. It also comes with an upgraded software bundle that is also available to current users.

The new Hiptop is physically nearly identical to its predecessor, featuring a 16-bit color screen that rotates out of the way to reveal a QWERTY thumbboard. Although designed with a focus on data, it also works as an against-the-face phone. However, the original Hiptop ran only on GSM/GPRS 1900 MHz networks, while the new model is a tri-band phone running on GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 MHz networks. Apparently it is not the much-awaited third generation Hiptop, previously shown at the 3GSM World Congress last February.

The new Hiptop is so far available only through Fido in Canada. Fido states that the new device's tri-band capabilities and Fido's roaming relationships with a wide number of other carriers will allow users the ability to use the Hiptop nearly anywhere in the world.

The new Hiptop also includes version 1.3 of the Danger software. Current users will also be able to download and install the new software free of charge. Version 1.3 includes a new revised Catalog menu for downloading new software and content downloads, as well as new content licensed from Sony Music including sound effects from popular songs and quotes from historical figures. It also includes cut/copy/paste features for easier text editing, repeating alerts, and various other usability improvements in the menu system and AOL Instant Messenger application.
