Following rampant rumours on the web, Sony Ericsson unveils the P910 communicator and its integrated thumbboard, broad e-mail support, quadruple the memory and improved screen.
Keeping up its trend of only making minor adjustments to its line-up of communicators, Sony Ericsson today announced the successor to its second-generation communicator, the P900. The third-generation communicator, to be known as the P910, closely resembles the P900, but offers a slightly updated design incorporating among other things a thumbboard and improved screen.

Still harbouring most features found in the popular P900, such as the five-way jog dial and dual usage modes courtesy of the flip-down keypad, the P910 also takes on several new features. The internal memory of the communicator has been expanded from 16 MB to 64 MB, and Sony Ericsson will also include a 32 MB Memory Stick Duo card in the sales package as opposed to the 16 MB found in P900 sales packages. Also, the P910 supports Memory Stick Duo Pro cards up to 1 GB in size.
The P910 also maintains support for IrDA, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, while receiving a slight upgrade in the screen department that enables it to view 18-bit or 262,144 colours simultaneously. The integrated digital camera is still in place and still capable of shooting both still pictures and video, and also retains the original 0.3 Megapixel resolution found in the P900.
As a result of Sony Ericsson's collaboration with a wide range of e-mail providers such as Smartner, IBM, Extended Systems, Visto, RIM BlackBerry, Seven and IntelliSync, the Sony Ericsson P910 supports all of the aforementioned e-mail solutions, arguably rendering it the most versatile mobile device in existence.
As with the P900 model, the P910 will also include several applications out of the box - some trial, and some full versions. The latter include the highly popular Opera web browser with its Small Screen Rendering (SSR) technology, as well as a newly developed version of the AvantGo offline web browser which has proved extremely popular on other mobile device platforms.
Additionally, users will find applications such as Media Viewer, which provides direct access to news from sources such as Financial Times and Promyzer, which offers real-time market quotes and stock trading. HP Runestone will allow messages, pictures, calendars and contacts to be printed directly to a Bluetooth-enabled HP printer, while navigation tool Wayfinder is included on the accompanying CD, able to work in conjunction with a Bluetooth GPS receiver to function as a turn by turn in-car navigation system.
Users can also buy and download additional applications directly over the air to the phone using an on-device application shop.
Three slightly different versions of the P910 will be available for different markets. The P910a, offering tri-band GSM 850/1800/1900 MHz, will be available in North and Latin America. The P910c offers tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz and will be available on the China mainland, while the P910i is for all remaining markets and also offers GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz.
According to Sony Ericsson, the P910 will start shipping globally in the third quarter and exists with five different keyboard variants to meet the needs of different language groups: Qwerty, Qwertz, Azerty, Russian and Greek.
