Archos AV400 series unveiledBy Jørgen Sundgot, Wednesday 14 July 2004
The latest portable media viewer from Archos offers 20 to 100 GB of storage, broad format support including MPEG4, DivX, XviD, USB 2.0 and TV recording - plus much more.

Portable media viewer mainstay Archos has unveiled its latest offering for those eager to enjoy audio, video and pictures on the go: the AV400. To offer storage capacities ranging between 20 and 100 GB and TFT displays at either 3.5" or 3.8" depending on model, the AV400 will become one of the most versatile portable media viewers on the market with a mind-boggling feature set.

As with previous units in Archos' AV series, the AV400 will be capable of viewing a variety of digital media, including audio, video and pictures. Audio formats supported include MP3, WMA and WAV, complete with support for protected files in Microsoft's WMA format. Video support includes MPEG4 SP at 704 x 480 pixels, the open-source XviD protocol and DivX 4.0 and 5.0, while pictures stored in JPEG and BMP format can also be viewed.

Archos' new AV400 portable media viewer supports a multitude of audio, video and picture formats
Utilizing a TV cradle with a composite video line in, owners will be able to record video in MPEG4 SP format with ADPCM stereo sound at 512 x 384 pixels and 30 FPS in AVI format. Meanwhile, audio recording is also supported from any analog source - including the built-in microphone - in WAV format. For playback, owners can either utilize the 3.5 mm earphone jack, or the built-in external speaker.

Archos will also make available a dual-function radio and remote control accessory which will enable users to listen to as well as record radio broadcasts in MP3 format, complete with a feature reminiscent of time delay in where users can initiate recording after a song has started and still capture its beginning.

The AV400 will also feature a CompactFlash expansion slot for the purpose of transferring pictures directly from digital cameras onto its harddisk, while an optional adapter will provide compatibility with SD, MMC, SmartMedia, Memory Stick and Memory Stick Pro formats. As previously mentioned, the AV400 will be available in multiple models with storage capacity ranging from 20 to 100 GB and screen sizes from 3.5" to 3.8". Regardless of size, however, all displays will feature 18-bit colour depth.

The 20 GB version will also feature a removable battery for extended battery life, while all models include the one-time set-up TV Cradle which acts as a docking station for the AV400 to let users record directly from a TV, VCR or cable/satellite tuner. According to Archos, the AV400 Recording Scheduler software directly controls the tuner inside ones VCR or cable/satellite receiver to automatically adjust the channel and record based on the time and duration of the schedule.

Furthermore, the AV400 Scheduler will synchronize with Yahoo TV Guide (where available) from the Internet to allow users to preset their recordings for the week or month in advance. USB 1.1 and 2.0 compatibility allows the device to be seen as an removable hard drive when connected to a PC, letting users copy files back and forth.

According to Archos, the AV400 also will be compatible with Microsoft’s Windows Media Player 10 and Portable Media Center devices, however the company did not go into detail as to how this is achieved.

The 20 and 80 GB models of the AV400 series will be available in stores worldwide beginning the first week in July and are priced at $549.95 USD and $799.95 USD, respectively. Archos did not comment on when additional models would be available, nor their pricing.
