Sharp has announced that they will be dropping their own proprietary ITRON OS for future mobile phones and switching instead to Symbian OS. ITRON has appeared in many Sharp phones, including the GX line and various phones for NTT DoCoMo in Japan. Symbian OS, made by Symbian, which in turn is owned by several major handset makers, is a newer phone OS designed from the start to scale from high-end mobile phones to smartphones to phone-centric communicators.
