Japanese carrier KDDI has announced that it will integrate Macromedia's new Flash Lite 1.1 into several of their upcoming phones, including building portions of the interface using Flash Lite. Flash Lite is a stripped down version of the proprietary Macromedia Flash format widely used on the Internet that now supports both Flash and SVG-based vector graphics, network-aware vector-based images, and audio support. The Flash-based interface will be part of KDDI's "au" service. By building portions of the portal and interface in Flash, KDDI hopes to be able to deliver more a visually-impressive interface than hard-coding the menu system, as well as offering developers another way to develop applications for handsets. Sony Ericsson, Sanyo, and Kyocera have all committed to delivering Flash-enabled handsets to KDDI for deployment in July.
