Motorola A630 flips with QWERTYBy Larry Garfield, Thursday 1 July 2004
Motorola's latest phone moves sideways, offering users up to date connectivity and features and a QWERTY keyboard for fast messaging support.

Motorola has taken the wraps off off of its latest phone, the A630, offering an unconventional design. Rather than a usual flip phone, the A630 flips open sideways to reveal a QWERTY thumbboard and other high-end features.

The A630 opens to reveal a thumbboard
The A630 is the size of a typical mobile phone, but unlike most phones its hinge is on the side so that it opens up like a pager. Apparently recognizing the difficulty of using a T9 keypad for intensive text messaging, Motorola has used the rotated design to allow them to include a full QWERTY thumbboard with directional pad instead of just a number pad, making texting, email, and instant messaging easier. The exterior of the phone still includes a number pad for phone dialing, as well as a monochrome caller ID display.

The A630 doesn't stop at just the thumbboard, however. The handset comes with an integrated 0.3 megapixel (VGA) camera with 4x zoom (presumably digital), SMS and MMS support for sending and sharing text and images, dedicated gaming keys and a 220 x 176 pixel 16-bit color display that offers portrait as well as landscape views. It also supports Bluetooth for wireless connectivity to a headset, handheld, or PC. The phone also includes a speakerphone mode, and all of that runs on a tri-band GSM radio.

Included software on the A630 allows for downloadable J2ME applications, downloadable polyphonic ringtones, and e-mail. The included e-mail application supports POP3 and IMAP4, while an included instant messaging client supports multiple IM networks.

The Motorola A630 will be available through Cingular Wireless later this summer.
