1.87 billion mobile users by 2007By Larry Garfield, Thursday 17 June 2004
A new study by the Yankee Group predicts that EMEA will remain the largest market, but worldwide growth will lead to 1.87 billion mobile users by the end of 2007.

According to a new study by Research firm The Yankee Group, the biggest growth in mobile devices will come from Asia, Latin America, and Africa, pushing the number of mobile users to 1.87 billion by the end of 2007. The EMEA market (Europe, Middle East, Africa) will remain the biggest revenue generator, however.

1.87 billion users may sound like a lot, but it represents only 27.4% of the world's population; still a fair number. The study predicts a compound annual growth rate of 8.7% between 2002 and 2007 worldwide, with Asia-Pacific having the biggest growth at 13.6%.

Asia-Pacific will show the biggest growth in the coming years, the study predicts, and will account for 38% of total global revenue. That will fall short, however, of the EMEA revenue predictions of 40% of the total world revenue on mobile devices and services. The Yankee Group believes that will be due in part to customer growth and in part to a growing average revenue per customer in most regions.

Data services will also become a larger part of most mobile carrier's profit margins. In 2002, data services accounted for only 8.5% of total operator revenue. In 2007, the Yankee Group predicts that will have grown to over 25%. In the Asia-Pacific market, one third of all revenue is expected to be data-driven.

The mobile industry has set an informal target for itself of 2 billion mobile users worldwide by the end of the decade. At its current rate, the Yankee Group expects that they will come close, but if they succeed it will be only just barely.
