Nokia launches entry-level 2600 and 2650By Larry Garfield, Monday 14 June 2004
Nokia has fired back at critics claiming its low-end product line is weak with two new entry-level models.

Market analysts have been blaming Nokia's recent decline in marketshare on its poor low-end offerings. Nokia has now responded with not one but two new entry-level handsets, the Nokia 2600 and the Nokia 2650.

The 2650 is Nokia's new answer to the entry market
The Nokia 2600 is a fairly traditional candybar design phone, running on either 900/1800 MHz GSM or 850/1900 MHz GSM, depending on the market. Weighing in at a svelt 94.5 grams, it is rated for 3.5 hours of talk time or 250 hours standby. On the software side, the Nokia 2600 comes with an enhanced calendar and reminder functionality. There is support for polyphonic ring tones with distinctive-ring for different callers. The Nokia 2600 also supports pre-installed games. It will come in a variety of colors depending on the region.

The Nokia 2650 is available only in a 900/1800 MHz GSM version. Weighing only 97 grams, it is rated for 3 hours tlak time or 300 hours standby. It offers a folding clamshell design, as well as many features previously considered high-end. That includes a color display, browser functionality as well as MMS, and Java-support. The included web browser supports XHTML, the current W3C standard for web pages, while the rest of the phone supports color themes and graphics. Distinctive-ring polyphonic ring tones and LED indicators are included as well. Additional themes, ring tones, and Java games will be available for purchase and download through Nokia. The 2650 will also come in multiple colors, depending on the market.

Nokia expects both handsets to be available in the third quarter of this year. Pricing information was not available, but will likely vary depending on the carrier.
