Bluetooth 1.2 coming to Palm OSBy Larry Garfield, Monday 14 June 2004
PalmSource has announced that it has licensed a Bluetooth 1.2 stack from Extended Systems, which it will be building into Palm OS. Current versions of Palm OS support the Bluetooth 1.1 specification, which is the most common version supported today. The newer Bluetooth 1.2 specification, which is supported by very few products so far but is fully backwards compatible, uses Adaptive Frequency Hopping (AFH) to reduce interference from other devices that use the 2.4 GHz spectrum. That includes 802.11b and 802.11g (Wi-Fi) wireless LAN technologies, some cordless phones, and microwave ovens. AFH better adjusts to the local environment to avoid "bumping into" other transmission technologies, which in turn helps ensure that both systems are able to transmit at full bandwidth.

There is no word on when Palm OS devices with Bluetooth 1.2 will appear. Current Palm OS handhelds with Bluetooth 1.1 support include the palmOne Tungsten T3 and Zire 72, as well as the Sony CLIE PEG-TH55 (UK version only) and PEG-UX50.
