Chalking up a first for handset manufacturers, Nokia has launched a Bluetooth-based, foldable Wireless Keyboard to be compatible with its Series 60 smartphones.
At events held in Helsinki and Singapore today, Nokia unveiled a portable keyboard dubbed the Nokia Wireless Keyboard. A full-QWERTY keyboard, the Nokia Wireless Keyboard utilizes Bluetooth technology to connect to compatible phones based on the Series 60 platform, including the Nokia 7610 phone which began shipping this month, and the Nokia 6630, and Nokia 6260 phones, also announced today.
According to Nokia, its Wireless Keyboard is optimized for heavy use of text-based applications in the smartphones and includes a full-QWERTY keyboard, four directional arrow keys and short cut keys to speed up access to the main terminal menu and messaging applications including SMS, e-mail and more.
To be available in English and German/Scandinavian keyboard layouts, the wireless keyboard applications for compatible models will have broad language support including English, Dutch, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish.
The Nokia Wireless Keyboard is powered by two AAA batteries enabling an operating time of up to 50 hours, weighs 190 grams and measures 262 x 87 x 13 mm when open and 133 x 87 x 19 mm when folded.
The keyboard is expected to be available in the European, Asia-Pacific and Americas markets during the fourth quarter of 2004 at a retail price of approximately 135 EUR excluding local taxes.
