The non-governmental American watchdog group Council for Excellence in Government has released a new report on the work done by the recently-created US Department of Homeland Security, claiming that the agency can and should do more with mobile technology to keep citizens up to date on emergency developments. One of the recommendations in the report included using the Emergency Email Wireless Network, a free non-profit corporation that delivers to subscribers via e-mail, mobile phone, or pager emergency and time-sensitive information (fires, school closings, severe weather, etc.) provided by local and state authorities. The Department will be reviewing the proposal later today.
The report did not state what sorts of emergency information should be sent to subscribers. To date there have been no terrorism-related emergencies within the United States since the World Trade Center bombing on 11 September 2001.
