Axim X30 times threeBy Larry Garfield, Tuesday 18 May 2004
Dell has launched three new Axim handhelds, all with the same name, all running Windows Mobile 2003 SE, and two sporting dual wireless connectivity.

Dell has announced a new line of Axim Windows Mobile handhelds, all conveniently named the X30.

Three devices for the name of one
All three Axims X30 run Windows Mobile 2003 SE, making them the first new handhelds to run the new revision of Microsoft's handheld OS. All three also share a common body design, generally rectangular and measuring 116 x 14.9 x 77.2 mm (122 mm high for the wireless models) and weighing 139 grams (135 grams for the non-wireless model). All three also sport 3.5 inch 240 x 320 QVGA 16-bit color TFT displays, standard to most Windows Mobile handhelds of the past few years, as well as an SDIO-capable Secure Digital card slot and an IR port. All three models include both a microphone and polyphonic speaker. They are backed by a 950 mAh battery, but a larger 1800 mAh battery will be available as an add-on.

The "basic" model is powered by a 312 MHz Intel XScale PXA270 processor, and offers only 32 MB of RAM (split between active and storage memory) and 32 MB of ROM. Unlike its fellow namesakes the basic model does not include any wireless support. It ships with only a sync cable, not a cradle, and sells for $199 USD.

The - for lack of a better term - "midrange" X30 runs the same 312 MHz processor as the basic version, but ups the storage to 64 MB of RAM and 64 MB of ROM. It also adds a small antenna on top to support dual wireless capabilities, with both Bluetooth and 802.11b Wi-Fi support. It also ships with only a sync cable, and sells for $249 USD after a $30 USD instant rebate. The "advanced" X30 is identical to the mid-range, except that it ups the CPU to 624 MHz, the fastest of any handheld currently available, and includes a cradle for synchronization. It sells for $349 USD.

All three new handhelds are available now.

Additional high-resolution images of the new Axim X30 are available on the following pages.
