LG is back again with yet another new handset, this time the voice-activated, speaker-phone capable LX5550.
For the third time in a week, LG Electronics has announced a new CDMA handset in the United States. This time it's the voice-centric, moreso than for most phones anyway, LX5550.

The clamshell LX5550 measures 89.4 x 48.2 x 24.1 mm and weighs 110 grams. Backed by a 950 mAh Lithium Ion battery, it is rated for a 2.5 hours of talk time or 6 days stand by, somewhat less than the rest of LG's recent handsets. It is a tri-mode phone, however, supporting PCS, 800 MHz CDMA, and older analog AMPS networks. Physically it is very similar to the recent VX3200, with a color LCD display, blue-backlit key pad, and 5-way D-pad. There is also an Organic Electro-Luminescent external display, a la the VX4600, which is designed to draw less power than an LCD. There is also a USB connection.
The main push of the LX5550, however, is voice-control. Out of the box, the LX5550 support speaker-independent voice recognition for dialing contacts, digit dial, redial, voice mail, and a speakerphone mode, all accessible with both hands planted firmly on the steering wheel where they belong. Voice-dialable contacts include anyone in the 499 contact address book. The rest of the feature set is fairly standard for LG, including up to 26 polyphonic ring tones, customizable wallpaper and themes, SMS support, PIM functionality, English and Spanish menus, TTY/TDD capability, and T9 text input. The phone also bundles the Openwave WAP 2.0 browser for web support.
The LX5550 is available exclusively on the US Cellular network. It is available now for $249.95 USD without any promotional rebates or contracts. Price with rebates and service agreement may vary regionally.
