HP iPAQ h5550 handhelds to assist them with a variety of tasks including recording daily crew procedures, personal memos, and e-mail. Astronauts are also using the handhelds to listen to music, read e-books, and view photos from home. The handhelds remain in orbit and are passed from one crew to the next, with two on ISS now and two more coming with the next flight.

NASA says it chose the h5550 because it required next to no modification to meet their stringent flight certification tests, which reduces costs for reengineering. In the future NASA expects to equip their handhelds with barcode scanners and custom software to assist in inventory management on the station.">
