Sprint, Samsung launch 'camcorder phone'By Larry Garfield, Thursday 29 April 2004
Sprint's latest phone, the VM-A680 by Samsung, offers not only an integrated still camera but integrated video recording as well - and there's more where that came from.

Sprint has announced that it will begin carrying the new Samsung SPH-A680 flip-phone, to be marketed under the somewhat verbose name "Sprint PCS Vision Video Phone VM-A680 by Samsung".

The VM-A680 packs both a still and video camera
Billed as a "combo camcorder/phone", the VM-A680 is built on a clamshell design and incorporates a video-capable camera facing away from the user. The camera supports video clips of up to 15 seconds as well as still images at up to 640 x 480 pixel resolution.

The phone also features a "movie light", a floodlight built around the lens to improve lighting for both video and still images. Users can send movie clips as video mail to other users, save them for later viewing, or even set up a video clip as a screen saver to play when they open their phone. Users can control brightness, zoom, and other options to optimize their videos.

Besides the camera, the VM-A680 also features an internal color screen and an external color display. Voice-activation is available for most features, including phone status and voice memos. Naturally, the phone supports "older" picture mail as well as video mail, and allows users to attach voice messages to pictures.

Other features include a PIM suite, 300-number phone book, 2.5 mm headphone jack, and an "airplane mode" that disables the radio but leaves the unit on so that the user can play games and fiddle with the camera without interfering with airplane equipment. Sprint also plans to sell a Sprint PC Game Pad accessory for the VM-A680.

The "Sprint PCS Vision Video Phone VM-A680 by Samsung" will retail for $309.99 USD, or $149.99 USD with activation after rebates.

High-resolution images of the VM-A680 are available on the following pages.
