Zire, Zire 21, and Zire 71 have sold more than 3 million units worldwide. The original Zire was the fastest selling handheld in history, topping 1 million units in under 7 months, although the camera-sporting Zire 71, released a year ago, fast became palmOne's month-on-month leader. It was later supplanted by the Tungsten E, which became the highest-selling handheld in Q4 of last year.

The Zire line has been a success mostly with first time buyers, including students, women, and seniors, and has been bolstered by its low price (two of the three models in the Zire line launched for $99 USD) and low learning curve. Notably, two of the three Zires are only grayscale devices with no storage card support, while the Zire 71's most successful campaign billed it as "an MP3 player with a camera" rather than as a handheld.">

Zires bring new users in drovesBy Larry Garfield, Thursday 22 April 2004
palmOne has released its latest sales figures for its Zire line of Palm OS handhelds. In the 18 months since the line's introduction with the original Zire, the Zire, Zire 21, and Zire 71 have sold more than 3 million units worldwide.

Notably, two of the three Zires are only grayscale devices with no storage card support, while the Zire 71's most successful campaign billed it as "an MP3 player with a camera" rather than as a handheld.
