Utilizing the popular Mobipocket format, Cleveland's Public Library is one of the most recent institutions to kick off eBook loan services for mobile devices.
When Cleveland Public Librarian Cynthia Orr checks her new Motorola smartphone, in addition to making calls, it's to read new eBook titles available from the CLEVNET Digital Library Connection. Cleveland Public Library was first among a national network of public libraries to add Mobipocket eBooks to their download libraries, which can be read utilizing the free Mobipocket Reader software on Motorola, Samsung, and Nokia smartphones, virtually all handhelds, as well as on desktop and laptop computers.
"With my Motorola Smartphone, I can browse the library website, download eBook titles to the phone and begin to read. Mobipocket software is easy to use and with the phone's built-in media card, I can transfer eBooks to my PDA or PC to finish reading a title," stated Ms. Orr. "As with Adobe eBooks in PDF, after the lending period expires, the title automatically returns itself to the library ready for the next patron," she added.
Based upon a solution from OverDrive, CLEVNET now offers from dozens of leading publishers including HarperCollins Perfectbound, McGraw-Hill, Time Warner, RosettaBooks, eReads, and Fictionwise. Previous libraries which have implemented solutions from OverDrive include the Cuyahoga County Public Library in Ohio, the Essex County Library in the UK and, according to OverDrive, dozens of others.
Currently, the MobiPocket Reader supports all Palm OS 3.x, 4.x and 5.x devices, in addition to all versions of Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform for both Smartphone and Pocket PC, with the exception of the 2003 iteration of its smartphone platform. Additionally, there is also support for Nokia's Series 60 and 80 platforms, as well as the UIQ platform utilized in products from Motorola and Sony Ericsson.
