Only six months after the introduction of original N-Gage, Nokia announces its successor boasting hot-swappable memory, longer battery life, better controls and more.
Nokia today announced the N-Gage QD mobile game deck, the latest addition to the Finnish manufacturer's N-Gage platform which first hit shelves in October 2003. The N-Gage QD is a more compact device with a hot-swappable multimedia (MMC) slot for instant gaming, and according to Nokia boasts longer battery life, improved gaming controls, a brighter screen and the new N-Gage Arena launcher application.
Having dumped the much-ridiculed 'side talking' concept, the N-Gage QD will offer gamers compatibility wih all existing N-Gage titles, as well as multi-player gaming over GPRS and Bluetooth networks.

Equipped with a new, dedicated N-Gage Arena launcher application, the QD aims to simplify access to the N-Gage Arena. Using the launcher via a GPRS connection, N-Gage Arena members can communicate with one another, download exclusive content, access rankings statistics, participate in events and activities, and more. According to Nokia, existing N-Gage users will be able download the N-Gage Arena launcher from the N-Gage web site in May 2004.
As with the original N-Gage gaming deck, the N-Gage QD supports the full range of features found in Nokia's Series 60 smartphone platform, including personal information management applications, an XHTML browser, e-mail client and the possibility to download and install additional Series 60 applications.
The planned range of prices is expected to be from 99 EUR/USD with a contract to 199 EUR/USD as an unsubsidized, untaxed retail price. The N-Gage QD game deck is expected to be available in May 2004 for Europe, Africa and Asia Pacific and in June 2004 for the Americas, and will come in two versions: a GSM 900/1800 variant (Europe, Africa and Asia Pacific) and a GSM 850/1900 variant (Americas).
