The WLAN Smart Card Consortium has released a complete set of specifications which it claims will allow mobile network operators to extend SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) technology for Wi-Fi hot spot authentication. The full solution consists of the newly released Handler Specification together with the WLAN SIM Specification released in September 2003.
The EAP-SIM Handler will according to the consortium allow users to securely connect to Wi-Fi hot spots without fear of identity theft, as well as render wireless operators able to offer a broader range of WLAN services to trusted smart card users.
In order to identify themselves, users will be required to carry a USB SIM card reader, for which operators will issue the SIM cards in the same manner as they do for mobile phones.
