BenQ show new UIQ handheld: P31By Anthony Newman, Thursday 25 March 2004
Updated P31 Symbian device offers hard keypad and touchscreen, tri-band GSM/GPRS, Java, 1.3 MP camera, Bluetooth and SD.

Little-known manufacturer BenQ has shown a successor to its P30 Symbian WAN handheld, which was itself only announced this month.

The P31 will have largely similar specifications to its predecessor, which include tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM with GPRS Class 10 for data. Cellular functionality is propped up by support for MMS, 64-tone polyphonic ringtones and support for Java MIDP 2.0 gaming.

Other connectivity is provided by Bluetooth, a USB connection and IrDA, with further excitement in the form of a 1.3 megapixel camera - an inclusion that has become ubiquitous in recent announcements. Storage is covered by a Secure Digital / MMC slot.

The P31 takes a candybar arrangement, with the external aerial of the P30 now moved inside the dark shell, leaving the handheld at 150 g and 118 x 52 x 18 mm. This body holds both a 208 x 320 resolution, 2.6-inch 16-bit TFT touchscreen and a standard numeric keyboard, providing the user with both handwriting recognition and predictive text for data entry.

BenQ are claiming a 200-hour battery life from the P31, with 3 to 5 hours of talk-time.
