Motorola A840 joins GSM and CDMABy Anthony Newman, Monday 22 March 2004
Another handset from Motorola - this one features both GSM and CDMA in one package, with MP3 player, 2.2-inch screen, speech recognition and 1.2 MP digital camera thrown in too.

Today, Motorola introduced the new model A840, one of the first mobile handsets to combine both CDMA and GSM technologies for global roaming. The Motorola A840 allows users to be almost anywhere in the world and segue seamlessly from CDMA to GSM so they can keep talking, working, viewing or downloading without interruption.

The Motorola A840 handset combines 800/1900 MHz CDMA, CDMA 1X and 900/1800 MHz GSM, GPRS modes with seamless network switching. For globetrotting professionals, the model A840 delivers the ability to check and send e-mail on POP3, SMTP and IMAP4 servers, as well as conduct meetings using the built-in speakerphone.

The Motorola A840 is packaged in a clamshell design with an integrated MP3 player, removable Trans-Flash memory, large 2.2-inch colour display with 176 x 220 resolution, speaker-independent speech recognition, compelling gaming experience, and 1.2 megapixel integrated camera. The camera features short-range flash and 4x digital zoom, as well as video capture in MPEG4 format.

Other features include a picture phonebook and calendar, voice dialling, BREW support, Bluetooth, 64-tone polyphonic ringtones, WAP 2.0 browser, MMS and instant messaging.

The Motorola A840 is expected to be available in North America in the second half of 2004.
