Samsung unveils SGH-Z105, SGH-E800By Anthony Newman, Wednesday 17 March 2004
UMTS SGH-Z105 mobile phone includes rotating digital camera, 262k colour screen, video calling and polyphonic ringtones for availability this year; SGH-E800 features slide-up design.

Samsung have launched a new handset at CeBIT: the snappily-named SGH-Z105. The clamshell phone operates on the 3G UMTS network with roaming on standard 900/1800 MHz Class 10 GSM/GPRS and WCDMA networks.

The SGH-Z105 includes a rotating VGA digital camera, a 262,144-colour TFT screen and 40 polyphonic ringtones. Using the camera, the handset is capable of video calling across the 3G network, and the phone also supports video playback on the 176 x 192-pixel screen. The clamshell also includes a 96 x 64-pixel external screen running at a 16-bit colour depth.

Samsung's phone supports Java MIDP 2.0, MMS, WAP 2.0 and SyncML in a body weighing a hefty 132 g and measuring 95 x 50 x 26 mm.

Although no further details were available at the time of writing, Samsung claim that the SGH-Z105 will be available in Europe this year.

The SGH-E800 mobile phone offers a slide-up design reminiscent of the Siemens SL55. The slide is spring-loaded and semi-automatic, and the design weighs just 86 g, measuring 87 x 43 x 23.5 mm. The phone includes a VGA camera, colour screen, 64 polyphonic ringtones. A variant, the SGH-E810 also includes a 180-degree rotation for the camera in place of the E800's vanity mirror and offers motion-JPEG capability for recording 30 seconds of video, and a 15-multishot ability along with 4x zoom.

The E800 boasts a 1.72-inch widescreen 16-bit TFT running at 128 x 160 pixels. Both the E800 and E810 will be available in Q2 2004.
