Welcome neo, the first PMG mobile companionsBy Anthony Newman, Thursday 11 March 2004
IXI have launched their own brand of companion for their Personal Mobile Gateway technology, comprised of phones, cameras and messaging devices.

IXI have announced the first companion devices for their PMG (Personal Mobile Gateway) concept. The Personal Mobile Gateway technology (PMG) combines cellular (e.g. GSM/GPRS, CDMA, etc.) and short distance wireless (e.g. Bluetooth or other technologies like WiFi), with micro-router and micro-server functionalities. It is the point of connection between the wireless network and the new category of mobile devices for consumers (PMG Companions). The PMG can be a stand-alone device the size of a small mint box, or integrated into a cellular phone.

The PMG enables a whole new set of PMG Companion devices (e.g. watches, pens, phones, messaging terminals, gaming devices, cameras) that deliver a superior user experience, while still focused on fashion and budget. They cost less to manufacture, can be brought to market much faster than ordinary mobile phones or smartphones, and generate greater data usage. The PMG also seamlessly connects existing legacy terminals (e.g. PDAs, laptops) with no additional client software needed.

neoFone, neoChat prototypes

neo was launched by IXI at 3GSM as the foremost brand for PMG technology. It provides a single source of PMG-enabled devices for mobile operators and a distribution and brand umbrella for manufacturers of PMG-enabled devices.

PMG technology allows PMG Companion devices to be tailored to specific end-user activities, such as messaging, photos, gaming etc. PMG-enabled devices claim to be delivered more quickly to market than traditional ‘all-in-one’ phones or smart phones and give end users more choices over the applications they use. The devices will create additional data traffic and revenue for network operators and provide increased variety and a more targeted solution for end users.

The first neo collection of PMG-enabled devices, aimed at the mobile youth market, was unveiled at 3GSM World Congress ‘04. The PMG phone and the two PMG Companion devices cover the most popular current wireless applications. neoFone NF-10 is a mobile phone that provides PMG functionality. The two Companion devices provide messaging and photo services: neoChat NC-10 delivers email, SMS and IM and neoSnap NS-10 delivers digital photos. Using neoChat, a neo user will be able to stay in touch over Instant Messaging (IM) and email while mobile, and, using neoSnap, take pictures and have them automatically sent to a Web photo album.

These devices will become commercially available in March of this year in Italy and shortly after in other European countries, and in the USA in the second half of the year. DAI Telecom is among the first to distribute neo products in Italy.
