New Motorola handsets dance to the beatBy Jørgen Sundgot, Monday 8 March 2004
Electronic music festival M3 Music Summit sees the introduction of three new music-oriented mobile devices from Motorola: the E398, C650 and Linux-powered E680.

Today, from the M3 Music Summit in Miami Beach, Motorola introduced three new handsets and new wireless content created by MTV exclusively for Motorola. Each of the new handsets are, according to Motorola, designed to maximize the mobile music experience for music lovers and artists worldwide.

Motorola's new E398 features dual 3D surround speakers
Motorola’s new handsets range from the E398 with 3D stereo surround sound through the Linux-powered E680 with RealPlayer software and MPEG 4 video playback to the C650 camera phone with the embedded MotoMixer and MP3 ringtones. The new handsets deliver music-based sounds and actions across all functions - gaming, MP3 and ringtones, and claim unique features such as 3D stereo surround sound and sensory interaction technology.

The new Motorola E398 sports an integrated MP3 player, SanDisk T-Flash removable memory and dual, 16 mm 3D stereo surround sound speakers. What's more, vibration sensory technology and rhythm lights will interact with Java games, ringtones, caller ID and ambient noise to bring the handset to life. Lastly, a colour screen doubles as the viewfinder for the integrated camera with flash, and there's also Bluetooth support.

Also sporting dual 3D stereo surround sound speakers, the Linux-powered E680 comes with RealPlayer software and a large colour display offering a resolution of 340 x 320 pixels. Also supporting SD Card memory expansion, the E680 will allow users to store up to 1 GB of music and video, which can be transferred through the E680's USB data transfer support. Also, GPRS and Bluetooth support ensure wireless compatibility, while Motorola also claims mobile gaming finally gets serious with the 3D graphics and J2ME support of the device, coupled with an 8-way navigational pad and gaming keys, which also register multiple key presses.

Lastly, the Motorola C650 belongs to the more stylish cadre of handsets, supporting MP3 ringtones, boasting an integrated VGA camera with 4x digital zoom, a 16-bit colour display capable of showing up to 65,536 colours, MPEG4 video playback, J2ME and MMS support. Users will be able to download new wallpapers, screensavers, ringtones, games or applications, mix their own ringtones with the unique MotoMixer, individualize their incoming calls with picture caller ID, and - yet again - induce epilepsy fits through rhythm lights that display distinctive lighting patterns during rhythmic ringtones, events and games.

The Motorola C650 and E398 are expected to be available in the second quarter of 2004, while the E680 is expected some time in the second half of the year.

Additional hi-res pictures of the Motorola C650, E398 and E680 are available on the following pages.
