New report addresses video content on mobile devices: predics big push in 2004, provided partnerships are made and if phone users accept paying for it.
A new report published by the Wireless Internet Applications service of Strategy Analytics investigates the state of video content delivery to mobile phones. By 2008, the publication estimates that 150 million users worldwide will be consuring a range of video clips delivered wirelessly, generatin $4.7 billion USD of revenue.
Existing streaming video players, such as RealNetworks, are predicted to succeed well as partners in the market, as will other targeted vendors, since their products are designed to address the low-bandwidth connections available on modern devices, without need for expensive infrastructure redesigns.
The other tack has been taken by 3G operators, who have invested heavily in video as an important source of revenue, and have made infrastructure choices accordingly by adopting the fast data rates of third-generation mobile networks. However, the report is still uncertain about the extent to which consumers will pay for video content, however popular it seems to be.
Devices, however, are keeping up, with smartphones and connected GSM handhelds on conventional networks gaining the ability to play video content out-of-the-box, and even more conventional mobile phones also offering such functionality.
