Instant Messaging to be Next Big Thing on mobile devices thanks to heavy promotion of the technology formerly known as Wireless Village.
T-Mobile USA has officially adopted OZ Communications' Mobile IM Gateway to enable wireless instant messaging on mobile devices. The Gateway is already deployed and in use by T-Mobile subscribers across the USA.
A new generation of IM-capable mobile phones operate on the Open Mobile Alliance specifications for Instant Messaging and Presence Services (IMPS), which was once known as Wireless Village, meaning T-Mobile's operation will be standards-based around a single interface.
Although desktop instant messaging - whether via MSN, AOL, Yahoo!, ICQ or Jabber - has produced negligible revenue for the operating companies, mobile IM has the important revenue source of wireless data costs, if implementation problems can be overcome. The standards-based system of the IMPS aims to simplify the process of getting IM onto mobile devices.
The Mobile IM Gateway provided by OZ Communications allows T-Mobile to control and bill effectively for the IM services through a number of models and allows full compatiblity with different connection methods and IMPS specifications.
