PalmSource and Research In Motion have announced that they are co-developing a BlackBerry e-mail client for the Palm OS.
PalmSource and Research In Motion (RIM) announced today that they have agreed to co-develop a software client that enables Palm OS handhelds to connect to RIM's BlackBerry wireless e-mail servers.
RIM's BlackBerry wireless handhelds and accompanying servers have been popular with many businesses for years, as they offer full push-email to wirelessly connected handhelds on always-on connections. The service works by tying a BlackBerry Enterprise Sever e-mail server into a company's back-end network, which acts as an active proxy to deliver e-mail to BlackBerry handhelds.
The just-announced BlackBerry Connect for Palm OS will offer the client-side support for Palm OS handhelds to tie into RIM BlackBerry servers already installed. In addition to a Palm OS client, the project will also support BlackBerry Web Client, a wireless Internet email service for individuals and small business that does not require server software.
No pricing information is available, although PalmSource anticipates having the software system available to Palm OS licensees in the second half of 2004.
