Hoping to encourage the development of more attractive 3G handsets, NTT DoCoMo is recommending its handset makers to go with operating systems Symbian OS or Linux rather than comparable offerings from Microsoft. The Japanese mobile network operator's line on this became clear after its CEO, Keiji Tachikawa, stated in an interview with Reuters that Linux and Symbian OS were preferred over Microsoft's offerings, but refrained from explaining further as to the cause.
Compared to Microsoft's offerings, device makers utilizing Symbian OS gain access to more of the source code for the operating system, simplifying development. Linux however trumps both platforms, as the open source contender allows access to all of its source code and does not require licensing fees.
